Eden, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization, was founded in 1975 with a mission to improve the lives of children and adults with autism and their families. Parents and professionals alike joined together to develop a family oriented, multifaceted program with a well-trained and dedicated faculty. Inherent in Eden's founding was the commitment to provide a cost-effective, community-based alternative to institutionalization and to offer programming that would meet the changing needs of children and adults with autism.

Spring Hill Elementary School (Tennessee Special Education)

Maury school offers excellent, less-crowded special-ed program

Within the Tennessee school system there is a bright, shining gem that is Spring Hill Elementary School.

My 3-year-old was recently diagnosed with autism. He is currently part of the special-education pre-K program at SHE and has been attending since this past August.

He has an individual education plan and we attend meetings with his IEP team to develop his educational goals, troubleshoot problems and create a specific plan to carry out his education based on his diagnosis. It will challenge him in areas he excels and support him in the areas he needs extra attention.

When we started this journey, I heard horror stories about dealing with the school board and IEP teams and was scared. All I could think was that I needed to move so I could enroll my son in the Williamson County school system as quickly as possible. Oh, how misguided I was.

On the Maury County side of Spring Hill, SHE falls within the Maury County School District and serves grades K-2 with a special-needs pre-K program. Compared with Williamson schools, SHE offers a less-crowded school with more individualized attention for each student. For my son, they have surprised and delighted me with innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to meet his individual needs delivered with an attitude of collaboration and caring for my child that I could have never imagined.

The mission of The Jericho School (non profit 501(c) 3 corporation) is to provide comprehensive, individualized science-based education not otherwise available in our community. We believe those children with autism and other developmental delays deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential. The school’s curriculum provides effective treatment and education programs to children and their families based on Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior.

History

In 1995 a group of concerned parents and business leaders found the need to establish a new school for children with autism in Jacksonville Florida. The Jericho School was created to make available the best practices in early childhood development and education to families who have children with developmental disabilities. At that time The Jericho School was one of only a few select schools in the United States to provide a science-based curriculum utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis.

The Jericho School has continued to develop and expand, creating additional programs and services to reach more families and meet the needs of the community. The Jericho School has made training and education available for over 500 families and has been responsible for training many professionals and other qualified individuals in this community and beyond.

While the school started with humble beginnings, the school has evolved into a multi-faceted program that continues to expand to accommodate the ever-increasing number of children with autism and other developmental delays. The Jericho School has become a model program and a leader in the treatment of children with autism and the application of Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior.

Idaho charter school for kids with autism on hold

Associated Press

HAYDEN -- The Idaho State Charter Commission has declined to approve a charter school in northern Idaho intended for children with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

The commission on Thursday asked members on the board of the EPIC Academy to return in May with more information and a better budget plan.

The proposed EPIC Academy in Hayden would be the first of its kind in the Coeur d'Alene area.

Backers hope to open it for the 2010-2011 school year in a house the group has acquired.

Danelle Baumgarten-Pickett, a parent helping to lead the effort, says the commission commended the group on what it was trying to do.
